The Beginning

In 1996, amid one of the most turbulent periods in Afghanistan's history, educator Ustad Mohammad Hashim made a quiet but profound decision. He opened a single room — not a grand institution, not a well-funded school — but a simple space where knowledge could live and breathe.

That room became a sanctuary. In it, young minds found refuge from the chaos outside. Lessons were taught not with luxury, but with devotion. The curriculum was simple, but the conviction was immense: that education is the one force powerful enough to transform lives, even in the darkest of circumstances.

This was Fanoos — a lantern. A light held steady against the wind.

Phase One

The Room
